To access websites on the Internet, we use DNS servers that convert “numeric” IP addresses into understandable text domains and vice versa. These servers do not belong to us and we cannot influence them. But you can use the Hosts file to directly specify the correspondence of the necessary servers and domains. Where to find this file and how to correct it correctly is the topic of this article.
What is the hosts file for?
Access to websites on the Internet is provided by their IP addresses. For the current IPv4 addressing protocol, such an address is four numbers from 1 to 255, separated by periods. The more modern IPv6 protocol has addresses of eight hexadecimal numbers.
The IP protocol allows you to create a large network of unique addresses, but they are difficult to remember.
In order to address sites and resources "by name", domain names were invented - symbolic and easy wordpress web design agency to perceive. Sites available on the Internet most often have a domain corresponding to their IP address. The connection between the domain and the numeric address is carried out using the DNS domain name system.
The service of this system on the user's device matches the symbolic name with the actual IP address of the resource, which allows opening sites by domain. The system itself is supported by distributed servers around the world - when requested from a browser, the IP is first searched for on local servers, then on global servers, and finally transmitted to the computer, where the site is opened.
However, before accessing the DNS server ( they are determined automatically by the provider, but can also be set manually ), the computer searches for information in the hosts file.
DNS Query Scheme
The file is present in all operating systems. Its essence is the same as that of a DNS server: to match domain names with IP addresses. Only when using it, there is no need to access server networks on the Internet: all data is available to the device immediately.
Using the system hosts file allows you to speed up finding the necessary addresses, while the administrator of the computer or smartphone (its OS also has the file) has access to the mapping table and can edit it manually. The DNS will only be accessed if the desired address is not found in the file.
